Berlin Marathon fourth-place finisher heads quality field as thousands prepare for Sunday's landmark fifth edition race on the Nairobi Expressway

A proven performer on the World Marathon Majors circuit, Jonathan Kipleting Korir will spearhead the elite men's field at Sunday's Nairobi City Marathon as the Kenyan capital prepares to host the fifth edition of one of Africa's fastest-growing road races.

Korir, who owns a personal best of 2:04:32, enters the race as the fastest athlete in the men's marathon field and one of the leading contenders for the title. The experienced road runner brings strong international credentials, including a fourth-place finish at the 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon, where he clocked 2:06:45 against a world-class field.

His participation adds further quality to an event that has grown significantly since its inception and is expected to attract thousands of runners across various race categories.

Strong Challenge Awaits in Marathon Race

While Korir may start as one of the favourites, victory is far from guaranteed.

Among his chief challengers is John Langat, an accomplished marathoner with a personal best of 2:07 achieved at the Eindhoven Marathon. Langat has built a reputation as a consistent performer on the roads and will be aiming to deliver a breakthrough performance in the Kenyan capital.

Also in contention is Simon Kipkosgei, who recorded a personal best of 2:07 at the 2023 Berlin Marathon. Kipkosgei's experience competing in one of the world's most prestigious marathons could prove invaluable on a course that combines speed with tactical demands.

The trio gives the men's race a strong competitive edge, with all three athletes possessing the pedigree to challenge for top honours. Their battle is expected to be one of the major highlights of race day as they navigate the unique Nairobi Expressway route.

Unlike many city marathons around the world, the Nairobi City Marathon offers competitors the rare opportunity to race on an elevated urban highway, providing spectacular views of the capital's skyline while presenting a distinct racing experience.

Fast Men Set for Half Marathon Duel

The half marathon races are equally poised to deliver exciting competition.

Leading the men's field is Felix Kibet Masai, who arrives in Nairobi on the back of a personal best of 60:08 set at the 2026 CPC Loop Den Haag Half Marathon. The performance established him among Kenya's emerging road-running talents and positions him as one of the favourites for the 21-kilometre crown.

Masai will face competition from Francis Ewoi, whose personal best of 60:52 underlines his ability to compete at a high level over the distance.

With less than a minute separating their lifetime best performances, the contest between the two athletes could develop into one of the day's most closely fought races.

Both runners have demonstrated impressive speed and endurance on the international circuit and will be eager to add a major domestic title to their growing résumés.

Cherotich Eyes Women's Half Marathon Glory

In the women's half marathon, Sharron Cherotich enters the race carrying strong credentials following an excellent start to the season.

Cherotich posted a personal best of 68:12 at the 2026 CPC Loop Den Haag Half Marathon, a performance that confirmed her potential among Kenya's next generation of road-running stars.

She will be seeking to translate that form into victory on home soil as she takes on the challenging Nairobi course.

A strong performance on Sunday would further strengthen her profile and provide another indication of the depth of Kenyan women's distance running.

Landmark Edition for Growing Race

This year's event marks an important milestone for the Nairobi City Marathon as it celebrates its fifth edition.

Since its launch, the race has rapidly established itself as one of the continent's premier road-running events, attracting elite athletes, recreational runners and international participants alike.

The combination of a unique route, growing international profile and Kenya's rich distance-running heritage has helped the marathon carve out a distinctive identity on the global road-racing calendar.

As the countdown to Sunday's race enters its final hours, attention will focus on whether Korir can convert his impressive credentials into victory, or if Langat and Kipkosgei can upset the pre-race favourite in what promises to be a thrilling battle on the streets—and skyline—of Nairobi.
