Kenya’s capital is rapidly transforming its signature road race into a world-class marathon destination

For decades, Kenya has produced some of the world’s greatest marathon champions for races in Boston, London, Berlin, and New York. Now, Nairobi is steadily building its own marathon identity — one that organisers believe could soon rank among the world’s premier city races.

The 2026 Nairobi City Marathon has already surpassed expectations before race day, attracting more than 17,000 registered participants and exceeding the organisers’ initial target of 15,000 runners.

According to Barnaba Korir, the race director, the sharp rise in participation signals growing international confidence in the event and Nairobi’s potential as a global running destination.

“We had targeted 15,000 runners, but the numbers have already gone beyond 17,500 because the demand has been extremely high,” said Korir.

Organisers have consequently extended registration timelines and increased logistical preparations, including reordering medals and participant kits to meet the growing demand.

The race continues to draw athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and corporate teams from multiple countries, reinforcing Nairobi’s reputation as one of Africa’s emerging marathon hubs.

Among the notable international delegations expected this year is a group of nearly 1,000 participants associated with the Nairobi Expressway project from China.

Large local institutional teams have also signed up, underlining the race’s growing appeal beyond elite athletics.

“This is your city. This is your marathon. This is your heritage,” Korir said. “We want Nairobi City Marathon to become an event that the whole world looks forward to.”

The marathon’s signature course along the Nairobi Expressway remains one of its defining attractions, offering runners a rare elevated view of the city skyline while passing through major sections of the capital.

The elite field for this year’s race is also expected to deepen significantly, with organisers confirming interest from top local and international runners.

Korir noted that the Local Organising Committee extended elite registration windows to accommodate athletes who had not completed registration before the earlier deadline.

“We want as many elite athletes as possible to compete because the prize purse is significant and the competition should remain open,” he explained.

The 42km marathon winners will each receive KSh 3.5 million, placing the race among the most lucrative road events on the continent.

Organisers are expected to release the final elite athlete list in the coming days.

Beyond participation numbers, organisers believe Kenya’s growing technical expertise is becoming one of the country’s biggest assets in global athletics hosting.

Korir praised the role of Kenyan technical officials trained through World Athletics systems, saying their contribution continues to elevate local events to international standards.

“In Kenya, we have some of the best technical officials in Africa,” he said. “That is why our events continue to succeed.”

The recent success of the Absa Kip Keino Classic continental Tour event has further strengthened Kenya’s reputation as a reliable host for elite athletics competitions.

Korir also revealed that World Athletics experts are expected to assess Kenya’s infrastructure as part of the country’s bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships this week.

The inspection includes stadiums, transport systems, accommodation facilities, and competition infrastructure.

More Than a Race

More Than a Race

Organisers increasingly view the Nairobi City Marathon as more than just a sporting event.

The race is becoming a broader platform for tourism, economic activity, youth engagement, and city branding.

“We want Nairobi to be known not only for producing champions, but also for hosting one of the best marathons in the world,” Korir said.

The marathon now brings together elite athletes, recreational runners, families, corporate teams, and international visitors in what has become one of East Africa’s largest mass participation sporting events.

With participation numbers climbing each year and international attention continuing to grow, organisers believe Nairobi is steadily building a marathon culture capable of competing with the world’s leading city races.

“When people think about global marathons, they think about New York, Boston, and London,” Korir said. “Our vision is for Nairobi to enter that conversation.”
