Record Participation: From 10,000 to 17,000 Runners

The 2026 edition marks a significant milestone, with participation growing steadily year after year:

●      10,000 runners in the inaugural edition

●      13,000 in subsequent growth phases

●      15,000 in recent editions

●      17,000 registered runners in 2026 (sold out in 3 weeks)

This growth reflects increasing public enthusiasm, corporate engagement, and international interest in Nairobi as a destination for mass participation road running.

A Race Designed for the Future of City Marathons

Athletics leaders believe the Nairobi City Marathon is laying the foundation for Kenya’s next phase in global road running.

He also noted that the unique route along the Nairobi Expressway offers participants a rare blend of sport and urban scenery, showcasing the capital from a fresh perspective.

The marathon route continues to stand out as one of its defining features.

Representing Moja Expressway, PR and communications strategist Jeanne May Ongiyo emphasized the importance of safety, precision, and environmental responsibility in hosting the race.

The Expressway team has worked closely with organisers to ensure international standards in route design, athlete safety, and operational planning.

Environmental monitoring has also been integrated into the race infrastructure through collaboration with sustainability partners, including air quality tracking along the course.

Innovation, Sustainability, and Data-Driven Sport

Sustainability remains a growing pillar of the Nairobi City Marathon experience.

The event incorporates environmental monitoring, improved mobility planning, and data-driven insights aimed at enhancing both athlete experience and urban awareness.

These initiatives reflect a broader shift toward more responsible and future-oriented sporting events in major cities.

Community Impact and Youth Inclusion

Beyond elite competition, the marathon continues to expand its social impact footprint.

This year, 200 children from Mukuru Primary School and Kakuna Special School have been included in marathon-related activities through structured community engagement programmes.

These initiatives aim to connect young people from informal settlements to major national infrastructure and sporting experiences, reinforcing inclusion and opportunity through sport.

Partners Driving the Marathon Experience

The Nairobi City Marathon is supported by a growing ecosystem of corporate and institutional partners who contribute to its success across wellness, nutrition, infrastructure, and economic development.

National Bank of Kenya board member for marketing, digital, and corporate communications Bernadette Ngara highlighted the marathon’s role in promoting long-term wellness and community engagement.

With record participation, growing international interest, and strong institutional partnerships, the marathon is firmly positioned as one of Africa’s most important urban sporting events.

Looking Ahead

Organisers remain focused on strengthening the marathon’s global standing while deepening its local impact—ensuring it continues to reflect the energy, ambition, and pride of Nairobi.

The 2026 edition stands as a milestone in that journey, marking another step toward establishing Nairobi as a leading global marathon city.
